Chevy Volt... Opinions?

Everyone who has been waiting with bated breath for the past year and a half to see the production version of the Chevy Volt can now breathe a big sigh of relief. After some extremely unflattering press shots shots were accidentally released last week, people were extremely disappointed with what appeared to be little more than a Prius clone. Anyone who spends time photographing cars knows how hard it can be to make them look good and how easy it is to make them look really awful. Unfortunately, those shots that were unapproved and never supposed to be released anyway fell into the latter category.

The car that GM rolled out this morning as part of its centennial celebration in Detroit is a much more attractive machine that while different from the concept is still very attractive. Rather than the egg shape look we saw, it's actually much more like the car we saw in the Transformers 2 spy pics a few weeks back. The greenhouse is longer and the raked back windshield gives a very slick look. Perhaps the most controversial aspect of the design is the black trim around the side windows. The thick black border along the lower edge is meant to recall the transparent beltline of the concept. It definitely works better in darker colors where there is less contrast. On the inside, a fully configurable LCD instrument cluster allows different drivers to select the gauges they want to see. Overall the design team appears to have created a car that while certainly more mainstream than the concept, is still recognizable as the Volt and something different from the Japanese brand hybrids.

I think it looks pretty good and the fact that it looks a bit different then the Prius is a very good thing.  Price is a bit steep at 40k, but everyone knows american cars don't sell at sticker price.  Hopefully this car will do well and compete with the hybrid offerings from Honda and  Toyota.

Re: Chevy Volt... Opinions?

I really like the concept of the first 40 miles being all electric but I can't seeing myself paying $40k for it.  Hopefully as the tech matures, the cost will go down.

the savings arent worth the $35,000 price tag. for a daily commuter to work i would opt for a $20,000 focus that gets 35+ mpg

Re: Chevy Volt... Opinions?

This isn't your basic hybrid, this car runs on electric only.  The motor is only used to recharge the batteries, not to move the car.  If you have less than a 40 mile commute the engine never runs and you can plug the car in at home and recharge it for a couple of dollars (thats what I read at least).  Also there is talks that the government will give you a $7500 alternative energy credit for buying one.  I personally would rather buy a VW TDI and get 45 mpg's or just buy a civic and get near 40.  But there are a lot of tree huggers out there who will this just to say they are helping out the environment.  I bet Al Gore is first on the list to buy one.

I really don't think I give up driving a car that gets out of it's own damn way for one of these things.  25-30 MPG and having a lot more fun is better suited for me.

I don't know how fast they are but an electric motor has more torque from a stop then a gas motor does.

It's different, but it's just an automatic so  you only touch the shifter an average of 3-4 times per driving session.

Obviously I didn't design but I would assume it's that way to have a more "smooth" apperance while it is parked? ot/dunno

Re: Chevy Volt... Opinions?

I wouldnt want to replace all those batteries at end of its lifetime.

I am 100% supporter for hydrogen powered cars. It holds more energy per volume.
